Muscles Affected:

Frontalis: For facial expressions

Orbicularis oculi: Assists in pumping the tears from the eye into the nasolacrimal duct system and closes the eyelids

Orbicularis oris: Controls the shape and movements of the lips

Buccinator: Maintains the tightness of the cheeks and presses them against the teeth during chewing

Platysma muscles: Contribute to producing a myriad of facial expressions.

Mechanism of the muscle weakness (Bell’s Palsy):

  • Unilateral paralysis of the face's expressive muscles is known as Bell's palsy or "facial paralysis." The 7th facial nerve's injury or infection is the cause of it. In extreme cases, the paralysis causes the entire affected side of the face to droop. The person may only smile on one side and struggle to close the eye on the affected side.

Other symptoms that the patient could exhibit as a result of facial muscle weakness?

  • Other symptoms could also include drooling, heavy tears in one eye, difficulty closing one eye, drooping of the jaw, and unable to close one eye. Additionally, people may have facial pain or other unusual sensations, taste changes or loss, and a sensitivity to loud noises.
