Infants often receive an injection of the pentavalent(Penta) and pneumococcal conjugate vaccine(PCV) into the vastus lateralis muscle of the anterolateral thigh. The greater trochanter and linea aspera of the femur are where this muscle originates. It attaches to the tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligament and the quadriceps tendon, respectively, at the patella. Its action is to stretch the knee of the leg. The injection site can be found in the anterolateral aspect of the mid-thigh.

The deltoid muscle is the ideal site for administering the flu vaccine to adults in this scenario. The spine, acromion of the spatula, and the lateral and posterior clavicular fibers are the sites of origin and the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus contains the insertion site. The movement involves the arm being flexed and rotated laterally internally. Simply feeling the bone at the top of the arm will reveal its location.
