Name at least three muscles that actively contracts during the following activities and name its action and innervation:

  1. Turning a door knob

  • Biceps brachii

Action - The movement of this muscle includes supination and flexion of the elbow and flexion of the shoulder.

Innervation -  This muscle is innervated by the musculocutaneous nerve.

  • Extensor carpi ulnaris

Action - The movement of this muscle includes extension and adduction.

Innervation -  This muscle is innervated by the posterior interosseous nerve.

  • Pronator teres

Action - The movement of this muscle includes the pronation of the forearm.

Innervation - This muscle is innervated by the median nerve.

  1. Throwing a baseball overhead

  • Deltoid

Action - The movement of this muscle includes flexion, internal rotation, and abduction of the shoulder.

Innervation -  This muscle is innervated by the axillary nerve.

  • Pectoralis major

Action - The movement of this muscle includes the internal rotation and adduction of the humerus.

Innervation -  This muscle is innervated by the medial and lateral pectoral nerves.

  • Triceps

Action -  The movement of this muscle includes arm internal rotation as well as forearm extension.

Innervation -  This muscle is innervated by the radial nerve.

  1. Kicking a ball

  • Psoas major

Action -  The movement of this muscle includes external rotation as well as flexion of the hip joint.

Innervation - This muscle is innervated by the anterior rami of spinal nerves.

  • Rectus femoris

Action -  The movement of this muscle includes flexion of the hip.

Innervation - This muscle is innervated by femoral nerves.

  • Tibialis anterior

Action -  The movement of this muscle includes dorsiflexion and inversion of the ankle joint and foot.

Innervation - This muscle is innervated by deep fibular nerves.

  1. Doing sit-ups

  • Rectus femoris

Action -  The movement of this muscle includes leg extension and flexion of the hip.

Innervation - This muscle is innervated by femoral nerves.

  • Internal oblique

Action -  The movement of this muscle includes trunk flexion, compression of abdominal viscera, and also trunk lateral flexion and trunk rotation, which are both ipsilateral.

Innervation - This muscle is innervated by the intercostal, subcostal, ilioinguinal, and iliohypogastric nerves.

  • External oblique

Action -  The movement of this muscle includes trunk flexion, compression of abdominal viscera, and also trunk lateral flexion, which is ipsilateral, and trunk rotation, which is contralateral.

Innervation - This muscle is innervated by intercostal nerves, subcostal nerves, and the iliohypogastric nerve.

  1. Walking

  • Soleus

Action -  The movement of this muscle includes plantarflexes of the foot.

Innervation - This muscle is innervated by the tibial nerve.

  • Fibularis tertius

Action -  The movement of this muscle includes dorsiflexion and eversion of the foot.

Innervation - This muscle is innervated by deep fibular nerves.

  • Fibularis longus

Action -  The movement of this muscle includes eversion and plantarflexion of the foot. It also provides support to the transverse and lateral foot arches.

Innervation - This muscle is innervated by a superficial fibular nerve.

  1. Breathing

  • Rectus abdominis

Action -  The movement of this muscle includes trunk flexion, compression of abdominal viscera, and expiration.

Innervation - This muscle is innervated by intercostal and subcostal nerves.

  • Diaphragm

Action -  The movement of this muscle includes depression of the costal cartilages. It is also the primary muscle for breathing.

Innervation - This muscle is innervated by phrenic nerves.

  • Internal oblique muscle

Action -  The movement of this muscle includes compression of abdominal content, flexing and bending of the trunk.

Innervation - This muscle is innervated by the lower intercostal, ilioinguinal, and iliohypogastric nerves.
