Activity

Muscles

Action

Innervation

Turning a door knob

Pronator teres

Pronates forearm at radioulnar joints and weakly flexes forearm at the elbow joint

Median nerve

Pronator quadratus

Pronates forearm at radioulnar joints

Median nerve

Supinator

Supinates forearm at radioulnar joints

Deep radial nerve

Throwing a baseball overhead

Deltoid

Lateral fibers abduct arm at shoulder joint; anterior fibers flex and medially rotate arm at shoulder joint; posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate arm at shoulder joint

Axillary nerve

Supraspinatus

Assists deltoid muscle in abducting arm at shoulder joint

Suprascapular nerve

Infraspinatus

Laterally rotates arm at shoulder joint

Subscapular nerve

Kicking a ball

Biceps femoris

Flexes leg at knee joint and extends thigh at hip joint.

Tibial and fibular nerves from sciatic nerve

Fibularis longus

Plantar flexes foot at ankle joint and everts (pronates) foot at intertarsal joints

Superficial fibular (peroneal) nerve

Plantaris

Plantar flexes foot at ankle joint and flexes leg at knee joint

Tibial nerve

Doing sit-ups

Rectus abdominis

Flexes vertebral column, compresses abdomen

Thoracic spinal nerves T7-T12

External oblique

Compresses abdomen, flexes and rotates vertebral column

Thoracic spinal nerves T7-T12, and the Iliohypogastric nerve

Serratus anterior

Compresses abdomen

Thoracic spinal nerves T8-T12, Iliohypogastric nerve, and Ilioinguinal nerve

Walking

Soleus

Plantar flexes foot at the ankle joint

Tibial nerve

Tibialis posterior

Plantar flexes foot at ankle joint and inverts (supinates) foot at intertarsal joints

Tibial nerve

Plantaris

Plantar flexes foot at ankle joint and flexes leg at knee joint

Tibial nerve

Breathing

Diaphragm

Inhalation: Contraction flattens and increases vertical dimension of thoracic cavity

Exhalation:  relaxation causes diaphragm to move superiorly and decreases vertical dimension of thoracic cavity

Phrenic nerve containing axons from cervical spinal nerves C3-C5

External intercostals

Inhalation: Contraction elevates ribs and increases anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of thoracic cavity

Exhalation: relaxation depresses ribs and decreases anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of thoracic cavity

Thoracic spinal nerves T2-T12

Internal intercostals

Forced exhalation: Contraction draws adjacent ribs together to decrease anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of thoracic cavity

Thoracic spinal nerves T2-T12
