- Action: (1) Flattens and increases the vertical dimension of thoracic cavity during contraction (inhalation), and moves superiorly and decreases the vertical dimension of the thoracic cavity in relaxation (exhalation); (2) Elevates ribs and increases anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of thoracic cavity during contraction (inhalation), and depresses ribs and decreases anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of the thoracic cavity in relaxation (exhalation); (3) Draws adjacent ribs together to further decrease anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of thoracic activity during contraction (exhalation)
