1.  The sites of injection for both vaccines should be in the anterolateral thigh. The pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) should be administered in the right thigh part of the infant while, pentavalent vaccine (Penta) should be administered to the opposite part, left thighs. This is to prevent further swelling and redness in the thighs of the infant. The targeted muscle of the injection is the Vastus lateralis muscle.

Origin; Greater trochanter and linea aspera of femur

Insertion; Patella via quadriceps tendon and then tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament

Action: All four heads extend leg at knee joint; rectus femoris muscle acting alone also flexes thigh at hip joint.

To find the vastus lateralis muscle, start by locating the greater trochanter of the femur and locate it by using the separate borders; top border can be found a hand width below the groin area. The bottom border is found by placing the hand above the knee and this gives you a rectangular like guideline, from there use the side border, mid anterior thigh to mid lateral thigh. Before injecting, squeeze the muscle in order to increase the thickness of and depth, avoiding nerve injuries in the process.

2.  The site of injection for the influenza vaccine is at the outer upper arm. The targeted muscle of the injection is Deltoid muscle. The injection should be at the middle part of the deltoid muscle

Origin; Acromial extremity of clavicle (anterior fibers), acromion of scapula (lateral fibers), and spine of scapula (posterior fibers).

Insertion; Deltoid tuberosity of humerus.

Action: Lateral fibers abduct arm at shoulder joint; anterior fibers flex and medially rotate arm at shoulder joint; posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate arm at shoulder joint.

To find the deltoid muscle, use the acromion process; identify the acromion and use the guidelines of going down for about top border (2.5 cm) to bottom border (5 cm). Basically, creating a square in the process from there look the middle part of deltoid muscle which is the most ideal site for administering the influenza vaccine. There is another way of locating and that is the triangle method, but both of the method works the same.
