Turning a door knob

  • Muscle Name: Pronator Teres muscle

Action: Pronates forearm at radioulnar joints and weakly flexes forearm at elbow joint

Innervation: Median nerve

  • Muscle Name: Pronator Quadratus muscle

Action: Pronates forearm at radioulnar joint

Innervation: Median nerve

  • Muscle Name: Supinator

Action: Supinates forearm at radioulnar joint

Innervation: Deep radial nerve

Throwing a baseball overhead

  • Muscle Name: Deltoid muscle

Action: Lateral fibers abduct the arm at the shoulder joint, anterior fibers flex and medially rotate arm at shoulder joint, and posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate arm at shoulder joint

Innervation: Axillary nerve

  • Muscle Name: Latissimus Dorsi muscle

Action: Extends, adducts, and medially rotates the arm at shoulder joint, and draws the arm inferiorly and posteriorly

Innervation: Thoracodorsal nerve

  • Muscle Name: Triceps Brachii muscle

Action: Extends forearm and arm at elbow and shoulder joint, respectively

Innervation: Radial nerve

Kicking a ball

  • Muscle Name: Biceps Femoris muscle

Action: Flexes leg at knee joint and extends thigh at hip joint

Innervation: Tibial and Fibular nerves from Sciatic nerve

  • Muscle Name: Rectus Femoris muscle

Action: Extends the leg at knee joint and flexes thigh at hip joint

Innervation: Femoral nerve

  • Muscle Name: Semitendinosus

Action: Flexes leg at knee joint and extends thigh at hip joint

Innervation: Tibial nerve from Sciatic nerve

Doing sit-ups

  • Muscle Name: External Oblique muscle

Action: Acting together bilaterally: compress abdomen and flexes vertebral column, and acting singly: laterally flex and rotate vertebral column

Innervation: Thoracic spinal nerves (T7 to T12) and Iliohypogastric nerve

  • Muscle Name: Rectus Abdominis muscle

Action: Flexes vertebral column, and compresses abdomen to aid in defecation, urination, forced exhalation, and childbirth

Innervation: Thoracic spinal nerves (T7 to T12)

  • Muscle Name: Internal Oblique muscle

Action: Acting together: compress abdomen and flexes vertebral column, and acting singly: laterally flex and rotate vertebral column

Innervation: Thoracic spinal nerves (T8 to T12), Iliohypogastric nerve, and Ilioinguinal nerve

Walking

  • Muscle Name: Vastus Lateralis muscle

Action: Extends the leg at knee joint

Innervation: Femoral nerve

  • Muscle Name: Rectus Femoris muscle

Action: Extends the leg at knee joint and flexes thigh at hip joint

Innervation: Femoral nerve

  • Muscle Name: Tibialis Anterior muscle

Action: Dorsiflexes foot at ankle joint and supinates foot at intertarsal joint

Innervation: Deep fibular nerve

Breathing

  • Muscle Name: Diaphragm muscle

Action: Contraction causes flattening and increases vertical dimension of thoracic cavity, (inhalation), and relaxation causes movement superiorly and decreases vertical dimension of thoracic cavity (exhalation)

Innervation: Phrenic nerve that contains axons from cervical spinal nerves (C3 to C5)

  • Muscle Name: External Intercostals muscle

Action: Contraction elevates the ribs and increases anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of thoracic cavity (inhalation), and relaxation depresses ribs and decreases anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of thoracic cavity (exhalation)

Innervation: Thoracic spinal nerves (T2 to T12)

  • Muscle Name: Internal Intercostals muscle

Action: Contraction draws adjacent ribs together to further decrease anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of thoracic cavity during forced exhalation

Innervation: Thoracic spinal nerves (T2 to T12)
