Name the muscle that may cause the following facial expression and write down its origin, insertion and action.

  1. PLATYSMA

  • ORIGIN: facia of the infraclavicular and supraclavicular regions

  • INSERTION: lower border of the mandible, skin of buccal, lower lip, modiolus, and orbicularis oris

  • ACTION: depresses the mandible and mouth angle, and tenses skin of lower face and anterior neck

  1. MENTALIS

  • ORIGIN: incisive fossa of the mandible

  • INSERTION: skin of the mentolabial sulcus

  • ACTION: wrinkles the skin of the mentolabial sulcus, elevates, everts and protrudes lower lip

  1. ORBICULARIS ORIS

  • ORIGIN: medial aspects of the maxilla and mandible, modiolus, and perioral skin and muscles

  • INSERTION: skin and mucous membrane of the skin

  • ACTION: closes mouth, and compresses and protrudes the skin

  1. CORRUGATOR SUPERCILII

  • ORIGIN: medial end of superciliary arches, fibers of orbicularis oculi muscle

  • INSERTION: skin above the middle of the supraorbital margin

  • ACTION: pulls the skin of the eyebrow downward and medially, thus producing vertical wrinkles in the skin of the forehead.

  1. ORBICULARIS OCULI

  • ORIGIN:nasal part of frontal bone, frontal process of the maxilla, medial palpebral ligament, lacrimal bone

  • INSERTION:skin of orbital region, lateral palpebral raphe, superior and inferior tarsal plates

  • ACTION:

  1. orbital part - closes eyelids tightly

  2. palpebral part - closes eyelids gently

  3. deep palpebral part - compresses lacrimal sac

  1. OCCIPITOFRONTALIS

  • ORIGIN:

  1. frontal belly (frontalis): skin of eyebrow, muscles of forehead

  2. occipital belly (occipitalis): (lateral 2/3 of) superior nuchal line

  • INSERTION: epicranial aponeurosis

  • ACTION:

  1. frontal belly: elevates eyebrows, wrinkles skin of forehead

  2. occipital belly: retracts scalp
