1. Platysma

Origin: Fascia over deltoid and pectoralis major muscles

Insertion: Base of mandible; skin of cheek and lower lower; blends with angle of mouth; orbicularis oris 

Action: Draws outer part of lower lip inferiority and posteriorly as in pouting; depresses mandible

 

2. Mentalis

Origin: Incisive fossa of mandible

Intervention: Inserts into the skin of chin

Action: Provides stability towards the lower lip/chin to allow it to pout; Protrudes lower lip and pulls skin of chin up. 

 

3.Orbicularis Oris

Origin: Medial aspects of maxilla and mandible, perioral skin and muscles, modiolus

Intervention: Skin at corner of mouth 

Action: Closes mouth, compresses and protrudes lips; Compresses lips against teeth; and shapes lips during speech

 

4. Corrugator Supercilii

Origin: Medial end of superciliary arches, fibers of orbicularis oculi muscle

Intervention: Skin of eyebrow

Action: Creates vertical wrinkles over glabella

 

5. Orbicularis Oculi

Origin: Nasal part of frontal bone, frontal process of maxilla, medial palpebral ligament, lacrimal bone

Intervention: Circular path around orbit

Action: Orbital part - closes eyelids tightly; Palpebral part: closes eyelids gently; and Deep palpebral part - compresses lacrimal sac 

 

6. Occipitofrontalis

Origin: Frontal belly - skin of eyebrow, muscles of forehead; Occipital belly - lateral ⅔ of superior nuchal line

Intervention: Skin superior to supraorbital margin.

Action: Frontal belly: elevates eyebrows, wrinkles skin of forehead; Occipital belly: retracts scalp
