  1. Platysma 

  • Origin: Fascia over deltoid and pectoralis major muscles

  • Insertion: Base of mandible, Angle of mouth (modiolus); orbicularis oris, skin of lower face 

  • Action: Depresses mandible (against resistance); draws outer part of lower lip inferiorly and posteriorly as in pouting

 

  1. Mentalis

  • Origin: Body of mandible

  • Insertion: Angle of mouth; skin of chin (mentolabial sulcus)

  • Action: Draws angle of mouth laterally and inferiorly, as in opening mouth; elevates skin of chin

 

  1. Orbicularis oris

  • Origin: Muscle fibers surrounding opening of mouth 

  • Insertion: Skin at corner of mouth; mucous membrane of lips

  • Action: Closes and protrudes lips, as in kissing; compresses lips against teeth; and shapes lips during speech.

 

  1. Corrugator supercilii 

  • Origin: Medial end of superciliary arch of frontal bone.

  • Insertion: Skin of eyebrow 

  • Action: Draws eyebrow inferiorly and wrinkles skin of forehead vertically as in frowning

 

  1. Orbicularis oculi 

  • Origin: Medial orbital margin; medial palpebral ligament; lacrimal bone

  • Insertion: Circular path around orbit; superior and inferior tarsal plates

  • Action: Closes eyelids

 

  1. Occipitofrontalis (Frontal belly)

  • Origin: Epicranial aponeurosis

  • Insertion: Skin superior to supraorbital margin

  • Draws scalp anteriorly, raises eyebrows, and wrinkles skin of forehead horizontally as in look of surprise
