  1. Platysma
    1. Origin – skin and fascia of infraclavicular and supraclavicular regions
    2. Insertion – the base of the mandibles, skin of the cheek and lower lip, angle of the mouth, orbicularis oris muscle
    3. Action - draws corners of mouth downwards
  2. Mentalis
    1. Origin – anterior aspect of the mandible
    2. Insertion – skin of the chin
    3. Action - causes protrusion of the lower lip, and elevation and wrinkling of the skin of the chin.
  3. Orbicularis oris
    1. Origin - medial aspect of the maxilla and mandible and the modiolus.
    2. Insertion – skin surrounding the lips
    3. Action - puckers the lips and closes the mouth.
  4. Corrugator supercilia
    1. Origin - at the medial end of the supraorbital ridge.
    2. Insertion – skin of the forehead near the eyebrow
    3. Action - assists in wrinkling the forehead and drawing the eyebrows downwards and medially
  5. Orbicularis oculi
    1. Origin - the nasal portion of the frontal bone, frontal process of the maxilla, medial palpebral ligament, as well as the lacrimal crest and lacrimal bone.
    2. Insertion - skin overlying the circumference of the orbit, the orbital septum, the temporal aspect of the orbit, inferiorly towards the cheek.
    3. Action – closes the eye
  6. Occipitofrontalis
    1. Origin - the occipital bone, the mastoid process of the temporal bone, the epicranial aponeurosis.
    2. Insertion - epicranial aponeurosis, the fascia of the facial muscles
    3. Action - raises the eyebrows and wrinkles the forehead
