- Origin – skin and fascia of infraclavicular and supraclavicular regions
- Insertion – the base of the mandibles, skin of the cheek and lower lip, angle of the mouth, orbicularis oris muscle
- Action - draws corners of mouth downwards
- Mentalis
- Origin – anterior aspect of the mandible
- Insertion – skin of the chin
- Action - causes protrusion of the lower lip, and elevation and wrinkling of the skin of the chin.
- Orbicularis oris
- Origin - medial aspect of the maxilla and mandible and the modiolus.
- Insertion – skin surrounding the lips
- Action - puckers the lips and closes the mouth.
- Corrugator supercilia
- Origin - at the medial end of the supraorbital ridge.
- Insertion – skin of the forehead near the eyebrow
- Action - assists in wrinkling the forehead and drawing the eyebrows downwards and medially
- Orbicularis oculi
- Origin - the nasal portion of the frontal bone, frontal process of the maxilla, medial palpebral ligament, as well as the lacrimal crest and lacrimal bone.
- Insertion - skin overlying the circumference of the orbit, the orbital septum, the temporal aspect of the orbit, inferiorly towards the cheek.
- Action – closes the eye
- Occipitofrontalis
- Origin - the occipital bone, the mastoid process of the temporal bone, the epicranial aponeurosis.
- Insertion - epicranial aponeurosis, the fascia of the facial muscles
- Action - raises the eyebrows and wrinkles the forehead
