5 MUSCLES THAT ARE AFFECTED

  1. Frontalis

  • The frontalis muscle aids in raising the brows, wrinkling the forehead, and moving the scalp posteriorly, or back.

  1. Orbicularis oculi

  • The orbicularis oculi muscle helps to close the eyelids and pump tears from the eye into the nasolacrimal duct system.

  1. Orbicularis oris

  • The orbicularis oris muscle controls the shape and movement of the lips. It causes the lips to close, protrude, and compress.

  1. Buccinator

  • During chewing, the buccinator keeps the cheeks tight and presses them against the teeth. It also helps the tongue keep the food bolus central in the oral cavity.

  1. Platysma muscles

  • The platysma's main function is to help produce a wide range of facial expressions by depressing the mandible and lower lip and applying tense the skin of the anterior neck

MECHANISM OF MUSCLE WEAKNESS

  • Bell's palsy is a disorder that causes temporary facial weakness on one side of the face. In most cases, the weakness improves over time. The affected area appears to droop when you smile and resists closing when you blink or try to close one eye. This is caused by damage to the facial nerve, specifically cranial nerve VII.

OTHER SYMPTOMS INVOLVED

  • Headache

  • Taste loss

  • Changes in the number of saliva  and tears  produced

  • On the affected side, pain around the jaw or in or behind the ear

  • On the affected side, increased sensitivity to sound
