When we say a gene is expressing itself, what does "gene expression" mean in relation to protein synthesis?

  • Gene expression refers to the processing of genes to create RNA molecules that will form new protein molecules. In order to form proteins, genes would first undergo two stages (transcription and translation). First, the information encoded in the DNA is transcribed to produce a specific molecule of RNA. The RNA will then attach to a ribosome, where the information is translated into a sequence of amino acids, resulting in the formation of new protein molecules.
