You do not consume alcoholic beverages, but your friend does, and he consumes these drinks regularly and in large amounts, If we could examine your liver cells and compare with your friend, would we see a difference in smooth ER and peroxisomes? 

The smooth ER's job is to produce membrane lipids. The lipids are delivered to the membrane by the smooth ER to be added there. In addition to synthesizing lipids, the smooth ER detoxifies chemicals like alcohol. Hence, alcoholics have more smooth ER than non-alcoholics. Because more inactivating enzymes are created to cleanse the body and protect it from the harm of the chemical, regular drinkers have to drink more and more to get the same effect.
