One concept I learned from this lesson and found significant or crucial in our everyday lives is the role of the integumentary system in protecting our bodies against factors that may cause harm. The skin, the largest organ in the body and the primary organ of the integumentary system, is part of the body’s first line of defense, making it more susceptible to infections, diseases, or injuries from the outside environment. The integumentary system, along with its major organs and accessory ones, can defend the body against damage caused by trauma, pathogens, and the like, helping maintain the homeostatic balance in the body.
With that being said, I was able to come to a conclusion that apart from letting the body do all the work needed in defending itself against pathogenic agents and other factors that may cause harm and induce homeostatic imbalances, we also have to do our part in taking care of our bodies in order to maintain optimum health. This can be done by keeping yourself clean and free of external dirt all the time, avoiding lifestyle vices, wearing sunscreen all throughout the day, and examining the body on a regular basis to check for physical manifestations of abnormalities or diseases.
