The concept that I learned today that I chose is about Thermoregulation or the regulation of the temperature within our body. One of the ways to regulate body temperature is due to the adjustment of blood flow in the dermis. Two of these so-called adjustments are called vasodilation and vasoconstriction. Vasodilation occurs during too hot conditions when dermal blood vessels dilate, carrying more blood to the surface to let heat escape. Vasoconstriction, on the other hand, occurs under too cold conditions where dermal blood vessels constrict to trap heat within the body as the skin pores automatically close. Thermoregulation is one of the homeostatic regulation processes within our body to achieve equilibrium. This is also an important concept most especially in emergency situations where someone is stranded in a too cold area, they will be needing something warm to regulate their body temperature into equilibrium or normal.
