Activity 3

Discuss the basic life processes and your own example for each.

  1. Metabolism refers to all chemical processes happening in our bodies. It has two types which are catabolism and anabolism. Catabolism is a breakdown process, while anabolism is a build-up process. Exercising using weights to build up muscles is an anabolic process, while exercises producing a lot of sweat, specifically cardio exercises, involves catabolism.

  2. Responsiveness is the ability to react to stimuli. An example would be waking up due to the sound of an alarm clock.

  3. Movement refers to mobility or an individual's ability to perform actions such as walking or running. An Example of movement is dancing.

  4. Growth is known as the increase in the physical size of a person. Babies who only weigh around three kilograms become double in size and weight after three to four months because of growth.

  5. Differentiation is the transformation of a specialized cell from an unspecialized one. Stem cells or undifferentiated cells mature into cells with specific roles in the human body. For instance, cones and rods in the retina are specialized cells that signal to the brain what a human is seeing.

  6. Reproduction is the ability of a human to produce offspring and generate new cells. An example of reproduction is the formation of muscles due to physical activities.
