  • The smooth endoplasmic reticulum also includes enzymes that degrade inorganic poisons like alcohol and drugs. This organelle is particularly common in hepatocytes (liver cells), which filter the blood and remove toxins for breakdown. Some peroxisomes, such as those found in liver cells, detoxify alcohol and other toxic substances by transferring hydrogen from the toxins to oxygen molecules. People who are alcoholics would benefit from more smooth endoplasmic reticulum and peroxisome organelles since there is a greater requirement for them in him for alcohol detoxification because he/she drinks on a daily basis.
