It is important to study organs/the body at different planes and sections because of the following:

  • allows for uniform/accurate description of body and location
    • The anatomical position and different planes and sections are standard descriptions used by all medical professionals. In order to communicate problem areas, you must study and use anatomical terminology -- after all, saying that a patient has a painful stomach wouldn't narrow down exactly where that pain is. Instead, you would perhaps communicate to your fellow nurse/doctor/etc. that the patient is experiencing pain in the lower left quadrant of their abdomen. This specification may help in identifying what specific organs may be malfunctioning/injured.

  • allows you to identify the different body parts even when faced with images, etc.
    • Your patient/images of your patient (image/scans of their internal body) may not always be in the standard anatomical position. Understanding how organs look and are position when given different perspectives (aka the different planes) will allow you to identify their parts and give treatment in different situations.
