Give other examples of disturbances in the internal environment that can act as a stimulus.
a. Increase body temperature
-
If we have been exercising hard, our body temperature may rise above the set point, wherein the increase in our body temperature is the stimulus that causes negative feedback mechanisms so it is intended to lower the temperature. Since our body temperature is controlled by the hypothalamus, it senses if our body is too hot. Then, the response is that our body begins to sweat to try and reduce the temperature back to the correct level. Some people also do heavy breathing to release the heat and help them to cool off.
b. Estrogen and Progesterone during Menstrual Cycle
-
During the menstrual cycle, the estrogen and progesterone in a woman's body can also serve as a stimulus in a feedback mechanism. The rise in hormone levels feedbacks to the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland of the females to decrease hormone production. The estrogen hormone will serve as the signal, and it will bind to the cell's receptor molecules. Then, the response in the menstrual cycle is the egg release during ovulation, and we know if the fertilized egg is implanted in the uterus, the woman becomes pregnant. While, if the egg is not fertilized it will dissolve and the menstrual cycle will start all over again.
