Discuss the six basic life processes and your own example for each.

BASIC LIFE PROCESSES

1. Metabolism- sum of all the chemical processes that occur in the body

Catabolism- breakdown of complex chemical substances into simpler components

Example: Fats, which are large lipid molecules, are also degraded to produce energy and to create other molecules.

Anabolism- the building up of complex chemical substances from smaller, simpler components

Example: Growth of body parts such as bones and muscles

2. Responsiveness- body’s ability to detect or response to stimulus (may be external or internal)

Example: When your skin gets a 2nd degree burn you will feel sore in that part of the skin

3. Movement- motion of the whole body, individual organs, single cell, and even structures inside cell

Example: Movement of sperm cell towards the egg cell

4. Growth- increase in body/cell size or increase in the number of cell

Example: Height Growth

5. Differentiation- development of a cell from an unspecialized to a specialized cell (glow up cell version)

Example: When stem cells turn into sex cell, immune cell, blood cell

6. Reproduction- formation of new cells or production of a new individual

Example: Mitosis
