ACTIVITY 4: Feedback Mechanism
Give other examples of disturbances in the internal environment that can act as a stimulus to a feedback mechanism.
One disturbance in the internal environment of the body is blooding. When the body is injured, either internally or externally, the affected tissues release chemicals that prompt platelets to stick to the tissue (the effector) at the wound site. The body enforces a positive feedback mechanism to clot blood and stop its loss.
Another disturbance is changes in the blood pressure. When blood pressure is either too high or too low, a chemical signal is transmitted to the brain through the glossopharyngeal nerve. The heart's rate is then adjusted by a chemical message from the brain in response to changes in blood pressure: when blood pressure is low, the heartbeat quickens, while when blood pressure is high, it slows.
