ACTIVITY 7: Cavities

Can you identify the organs that are in the following cavities?

a. Thoracic Cavity

The lungs, heart, thymus, esophagus, trachea, and a number of large blood vessels that enter and exit the heart are among the organs located in the thoracic cavity. The sternum (breastbone) and the thoracic spinal column, along with the ribs and chest muscles, make up the thoracic cavity.

b. Cranial Cavity

The brain and the spinal cord (which is located in the vertebral canal), are two of the organs in the cranial cavity. Around the brain and spinal cord are the meninges and a shock-absorbing fluid.

c. Abdominal Cavity

The stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, small intestine, and the majority of the large intestine are all located in the abdominal cavity.

d. Pelvic Cavity

The pelvic cavity houses the urinary bladder, portions of the large intestine (rectum, terminal sigmoid colon), anal canal, and internal organs of the reproductive system. The region between the other viscera in females is occupied by the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and upper vagina.

e. Mediastinum

The heart, thymus, esophagus, trachea, and several large blood vessels are located in the mediastinum, which is the central part of the thoracic cavity between the lungs. It stretches from the sternum to the vertebral column and from the first rib to the diaphragm.
