Introduction of sexuality education lessons in public elementary and high schools

Sexuality/Reproductive health education should be one of the priority lessons to be taught to children in elementary and high schools. By doing so, children are able to develop themselves into making conscious, healthy, and respectful choices when it comes to their choices in line with sexuality. It does not promote the practice of sex rather, it recognizes that it is an essential part of people’s emotional and physical  health (World Health Organization, 2016).

The implementation of sexuality health education in schools in the country may lead to health advantages especially among the youth. The lack of education regarding the use of contraception may lead to unwanted pregnancies. Education is needed in this area especially among adolescents since they have a higher chance of being curious in these topics. This curiosity, together with the lack of education, may lead them to become dependent on non-credible sources posting false information about sexuality and family planning. When education is established in the country, they will be able to develop wise choices regarding their sexuality. Another is the prevention of STDs, especially HIV. Since they are now more aware regarding reproductive health, possible STDs and ways of transmission, they will be more careful with their choices in order to prevent its further transmission especially in the country. Lastly, reproductive health education may also cover the youth’s awareness on sexual abuse. Violence against women still remains as one of the country’s prevalent issues (Gov PH, n.d.). When children and adolescents are educated at a young age what consent means, and possible physical, sexual, or psychological aspects of violence, they may be able to establish their knowledge regarding sexual violence.

A possible disadvantage is that the country is primarily a Catholic country with the views and politics being influenced by religion. This becomes a disadvantage because it will take a long time before bills and laws become approved since the establishment of a reproductive health education clashes with the teachings of the Church. This is a reason why there is still a stigma regarding the topic of sex and why many people are not open to discussing their sexual health even with healthcare workers. However, it is important to remember that with sexual health education, it is a way of protecting the lives of Filipinos and helping communities and individuals in becoming more sexually responsible.

I think that this will be implemented however,  it will take quite a while before the country fully accepts sexual health education in schools. As what was mentioned before, many people are still not open to the idea of implementing these because of issues with their religion. I think there will be many protests both online and on site because of the said clashing of ideas. However, I do still have hope that the country will take steps in advocating for health through the implementation of reproductive health education.
