Discuss how preconception care contributes to a healthy pregnancy and positive pregnancy outcomes.
The modifiable factors that contribute to the widespread maternal and/or pediatric compromise such as gestational nutritional deficiencies and insufficiency of optimal biome development in the neonate can be mitigated through preconception care (Genius & Genius, 2016). Preconception health care is the medical care a woman or man receives from the doctor or other health professionals that focuses on the parts of health that have been shown to increase the chance of having a healthy baby (CDC, 2020). By identifying the biomedical, behavioral, and social risks to the woman's health or pregnancy outcome, preconception care contributes to a healthy pregnancy and positive pregnancy outcomes through prevention and management. Thus, reducing morbidity and mortality for the patient and the fetus, and increasing the chances of conception when pregnancy is desired as opposed to unplanned pregnancies that have a greater risk of preterm birth and low birth weight babies.
