Unmet Need and Practice of Family Planning

Answer the following questions and post your answers here. Cite references if possible.

  1. What do you think are the reasons of high unmet need of FP in the Philippines?

    1. I think that there is a high unmet need for family planning in the Philippines because of our conservative culture. I remember when the RH bill was being passed, the churches would post signs saying “obey God’s will; reject the RH bill” and I remember some protests happening here and there. There are people who are strongly against sex for pleasure, which I believe is their right, but when the use fearmongering tactics and create a huge taboo around having sex, then it becomes detrimental to the community because those who would have benefited from family planning methods feel shamed into relying on less effective methods of contraception.

  2. What are ways you can suggest to increase the practice of FP in the country? Give least 1-2 suggestions.

    1. Health education as early as grade school

      1. I believe that sex should be taught to student academically as early as grade school becuase I have met people who got pregnant as early as highschool. When you remove the taboo and shame around sex and speak about it from a clear cut manner, it removes the shame in potentially wanting to find out more for yourself later on.

    2. Barangay seminars on the availability of family planning methods in health centers.

      1. A lot of people do not know that they can avail of other forms of contraception for free in health centers. Condoms are about 100 php each, letting people know that they are free in the health center might encourage more people, especially younger people, to avail of them.
