Respect is the bare minimum when administering any form of healthcare. Be it during something as simple as history taking or as complicated as surgery, everyone is entitled to be respected. This is especially true when in a situation as delicate as maternity care.
According to Bulto, (2020) various countries in Sub-Saharan Africa show that women would opt not to deliver in a facility because of the disrespect they would experience. Despite this, reports of “disrespectful and abusive treatment” during labor and childbirth continue to appear in the world. Maternity care is a special kind of care given to women at a vulnerable time in their lives. As such, it is important to administer care in a way that preserves the dignity, autonomy, and equality of the patient.
