Pediatric afflictions are usually caused by the deficiency of some nutrients and exposure to certain toxins. Evidence shows that preconception care may work to modify these factors and result in a healthier and more positive pregnancy outcomes. An example of preconception care is taking folate supplements as its deficiency can increase the risk of miscarriages, down's syndrome, and neural tube defects.

According to Genuis, (2015) the top 3 micronutrient deficiencies in pregnant women are vitamin D, magnesium, and DHA. all of which are linked to intrapartum and postpartum complications and all of which are easily preventable with the use of supplements. Moreover, gestational exposure to other etiologic factors such as air pollution, exposure to pesticides, and even electromagnetic radiation from electronics may put infants at a higher risk of developing asthma, and heart diseases.

With all these threats to children even before they are born, it is important for a woman planning on carrying a baby to take proper care to avoid micronutrient deficiencies and harmful exposure as soon as they plan on getting pregnant.
