The article highlights the need to establish Respectful Maternal Care as the standard care when delivering maternal health services to childbearing women. It discussed the relationship found between the income of a woman and the quality of maternal care she receives such that those in low-income groups have experienced disrespect, abuse, or neglect more frequently than those from a high-income group. This treatment then provides an explanation for the deterrence of seeking timely maternal care from healthcare providers which facilitates the deceleration of reducing global maternal mortality. The article then encourages healthcare providers to ameliorate their promotion of respectful maternal care to enhance the trust of childbearing women in healthcare providers. Lastly, the article lists three barriers to the integration of respectful maternal care in its delivery in healthcare services which serves as points of consideration. The three barriers are (1) policies to facilitate RMC delivery, (2) normalizing RMC for all women during childbirth, and (3) extension of RMC principles to newborns who are also at risk for disrespectful and abusive care.
