- Other than the factors discussed in the lecture, what do you think are other factors affecting maternal mortality rate in the Philippines?
Given the current situation, COVID-19 indeed plays a factor in maternal mortality, especially here in the Philippines. In fact, there was a significant increase of 26% additional deaths in the year of 2019 (Regala, 2020). This may either be due to the fact that domestic violence increase since they were forced to stay at home for at most 2 years which led to miscarriage. The disease itself can also affect both the baby and the mother given that they are admitted in different places if either of them has the virus.
One must also take into account the socioeconomic status of the family. Due to location, pregnant women from isolated communities tend to have higher mortality rate because of the distance from health centers.

- Based on DOH (2013) , the top 3 causes of maternal mortality ration in the Philippnies is: complications related to pregnancy occurring in the course of labor, delivery, and puerperium, Hypertension complicating pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperium and postpartum hemorrhage. As for top 3 morbidity, there are: poor Access to Health Care Services, poverty and isolation due to geography ()
