1. What do you think are the reasons for the high unmet need of FP in the Philippines?
-
In my opinion, the contributing factors for the high unmet need of Family Planning in the country are (1) inadequate family planning resources and services, and (2) insufficient knowledge or lack of education, and (3) financial and geographical challenges. For the first mentioned factor, scarcity of contraceptives and health providers to deliver them builds a barrier. Couples cannot utilize modern contraceptive methods if the necessary services and materials are not available. In terms of education, having deficient knowledge on their reproductive health hinders them from properly exercising their right to make their own decisions about themselves and their family. Furthemore, harmful myths about family planning are easy to spread in the absence of science-based, inclusive sex education. Included in this factor is also the lack of information regarding where they can avail the family planning services. For the last identified factor, the delivery of services to families is hindered by the rising expenses of contraception and cutting-edge medical technologies. In addition, geography also plays a role wherein populations in remote or rural areas have limited access to family planning services.
2. What are ways you can suggest to increase the practice of FP in the country? Give at least 1-2 suggestions.
-
Referral systems - to map out all contraceptive methods that are not accessible and compile contact information to ensure continuity of care
-
Screening of unmet needs for contraception - to understand clients’ sexual activity, desire for pregnancy, and current use of contraceptives
-
Mobile health clinics - to reach geographically challenged areas and offer family planning services
