Preconception care (PCC) is an evidenced based healthcare service for maternal and infant health which medical professionals deliver to reproductive aged women. This has been an important measure primarily to reduce morbidity that may entail impact long after childhood and mortality of mothers and babies and as a way for a healthy and positive pregnancy. Preconception care is a way for mothers to be guided along the preconception period where many critical events of development happen inside the womb such as the formation of major organs of the fetus. Additionally, having PCC from the start of the pregnancy helps to screen and intervene for medical conditions and prepare for potential complications of the mother throughout her pregnancy. PCC also serves as means for the mother together with the primary care provider to plan and prepare for the remaining period of pregnancy to have a healthy and positive experience.
All in all, PCC is truly a much needed care to be sought by expectant mothers as its benefits all point towards a healthy and positive pregnancy. Although healthcare professionals do their responsibilities to educate and intervene for possible problems, the adherence of the mother is still a factor, most especially those who need lifestyle changes such as cessation of smoking and drug use. Still, health education about PCC changes the perspective of prospective parents and helps them to make necessary changes and steps for the healthier mother and baby in the womb.
