Maternal Morbidity and Morbidity

Answer the following and post your answers here. Cite references of your answers as much as possible.

  • Other than the factors discussed in the lecture, what do you think are other factors affecting the maternal mortality rate in the Philippines?

    • Adolescent pregnancy is one of the leading causes of death in women ages 15-19 years old. Recent studies have shown that they are twice likely to die during pregnancy or childbirth. Poverty, malnutrition, immature reproductive tract, child marriage, and gender inequality are associated factors contributing to this phenomenon.

    • Lack of skilled birth attendants in rural, isolated regions/communities that exist far from the country’s capital and urban centers, particularly in ARMM, SOCCKSARGEN, MIMAROPA, and the Cagayan Valley has limited women’s access to emergency care for women and newborns should any complications arise.

  • What are the top 3 causes of maternal mortality ratio in the Philippines? Top 3 maternal morbidity?

    • According to the latest data from the Department of Health (2010), the top three (3) causes of maternal mortality ratio in the Philippines are 1) Complications related to pregnancy occurring in the course of labor, delivery, and puerperium; 2) hypertension complicating pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium; and 3) postpartum hemorrhage.
