General Instructions

  1. This is an individual activity.
  2. Answer the questions below.
  3. Submit your answers in pdf/jpg formats only.
  4. Follow the file naming format: Chem40_QE6_<Section>_<LastName,Initial of First Name>. Example: Chem40_QE6_MHD_DelaCruzJ

Problems

  1. Write the notations for the following commonly occurring fatty acids and draw their structures.
    • palmitic acid
    • palmitoleic acid
    • stearic acid
    • oleic acid
    • linolenic acid
    • arachidonic acid
  1. Draw the “cis” and “trans” conformations of linoleic acid.
  2. Arrange the following fatty acids according to decreasing melting point: stearic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, and palmitic acid.
  3. Draw the structure of 1-myristoyl-2-linoleoyl-3-oleoyl glycerol. What is its ester name (with suffix “ate”)?
  4. Arrange the following in the order of increasing melting point:

A. 1,2,3-trimyristoyl glycerol (a.k.a trimyristin)

B. 1,2-dimyristoyl-3-palmitoyl glycerol

C. 1-myristoyl-2,3-dipalmitoyl glycerol

D. 1,2,3-tripalmitoyl glycerol (a.k.a. tripalmitin)
