The first part of the Unit introduces the concepts of Philosophy, Science, Theory, Research and Epistemology. It looks at the division or structures and patterns of Nursing Knowledge and presents different world-views in classifying nursing theories.

A unifying meta-theory will enable nurses at both the practical and academic levels to appreciate the complexity and simplicity of nursing, allowing them to articulate confidently what we do and why we do it.
Nursing epistemology is the study of knowledge shared among the members of the discipline, the patterns of knowing and knowledge that develops from them, and the criteria for accepting knowledge claims (Schultz & Meleis, 1988).
Go over and read the materials below and reflect on these as you go through this course.
