When a certain body part or organ is exposed to a function-altering stimulus, another body part or organ can change its size or activity to make up for the loss or dysfunction of another. This is called compensation. However, if the stimulus is not eliminated or the condition is not treated, the body can reach a point where it is unable to compensate and lead to decompensation. For further discussion, please view the lecture slides and video on mechanisms of cellular injury.
Self-check: After watching the video, can you give examples of causes/ events that can lead to cellular injury? When will the injury become irreversible?
