Guedel's classification is a means of assessing the dept of general anesthesia that was introduced by Arthur Ernest Guedel in 1937. Since general anesthesia became first became widely used in 1846, John Snow and Francis Plomley attempted to describe various stages of general anesthesia in 1936, but Guedel's detailed system was generally accepted.
