Section outline

  • In this topic, we shall examine the various patient's responses to genetic conditions and genetic testing. It is important for genetic counselors to identify specific responses of our patients so that we can adequately address this. There is no hard and fast rule in attending to patient's responses and genetic counselors can be guided by basic attending skills and primary empathy skills; as a the genuineness exuded by the counselor. Aside from patient's responses, we also deal with the counselor's own responses to the counseling situation. It is also important that counselors recognize that they may have biases and preconceived notions about the situation which may affect the effectiveness of the counseling session. In this topic, we shall explore more about counselor's countertransference.
