Histology is the only field that provides a detailed understanding and analysis of the structure-
function relationships existing on cells, tissues, and organs of the animal body at levels not
visible to the naked eye including the 3-dimensional relationships among their biochemical
constituents. This course which concentrates on the normal architecture of structures aptly
serves as a necessary prelude to the study of the abnormal (pathology) or alterations in
structure and functions as a result of injury or disease. It will provide students with the
knowledge and skills to examine, identify, and interpret the normal structural functionalities
behind every cell, tissue, and organ of the human body. In doing so, they will begin to develop
problem-solving and critical thinking skills that would reinforce the identification and diagnosis of
abnormal/diseased states. Histology, therefore, is fundamental to any biological, medical, or
dental curricula.
