Welcome!

This is a course that will help you develop self-awareness and build your skills on therapeutic use of self, rapport-building, interviewing, and using therapeutic modes. These are some skills that you will be continuously developing and using in your journey to becoming an occupational therapist.

In your later courses, you will be using these skills to get to know other people's cultures, build therapeutic relationships and rapport with future clients, and conduct evaluations and interventions. We hope that you enjoy this very skills-based and hands-on course!

This course will be heavy on skill acquisition. Expect that while we still have lectures which will be given as lecture videos, narrated PowerPoint slides, or modules, we'll be having more lab activities to build your skills in building rapport and therapeutic relationships, communicating, listening, observing, interviewing, using therapeutic modes, and managing challenging behaviors.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate improved awareness and understanding of self, client, and family
  • Conduct a proper interview
  • Utilize appropriate communication, rapport, and relationship-building skills to nurture a therapeutic relationship.
